So, I am finding it a little too difficult to maintain two blogs and am thinking about no longer posting on my other blog, Sew Oblivious. If you have ever visited there, you will know that it was intended to be a personal journal to track my progress in learning to sew, as well as a place for me to voice questions that I had. Unfortunately, I just do not have the time to do this and post over here. Since the sewing with children posts on Sew Oblivious fit neatly with my purpose at Mommy Repeat, I will continue to write these posts here. And I may also post weekly or bi-monthly personal project updates as well.
All of that to say that I have a new sewing project to share today - a miniature bunting handmade by Evan as a gift for his cousin's second birthday. Since my nephew is getting a play kitchen for his birthday, Evan is hoping that he will be able to hang this bunting there to decorate it.
This was such a simple little project. Evan picked out a few pieces of scrap fabric and I cut out triangles (about three inches on each side) using pinking shears to prevent fraying.
I helped Evan use a needle threader to thread a large needle with pink (of course!) embroidery thread. In case you did not know that pink is Evan's favorite color, there is no hiding it as the most prominent color here.
Usually, I let Evan use a metal tapestry needle or a plastic needle, since both are blunt enough that he can take charge of his projects without constant supervision. For this project, however, we used the largest sharp needle I had, since the cotton fabrics we used were too tightly woven to allow the blunt needle through. Evan did fine with the sharp needle - only poked himself once or twice - but I had to watch closely, rather than sitting back and letting Evan figure things out, as I normally do. He did not mind though. He was a proud little boy, so excited that he was actually allowed to use a "grown-up" needle.
It took us about three sessions to finish the entire bunting. The photo above was taken after our first day of working on it. Five or six triangles was about what Evan's attention could handle in one sitting.
The package is ready to send out tomorrow with a handmade present from Aunt Katie as well. Maybe I will share that one with you tomorrow.
Yes, my son calls me Mommy Repeat. He has called me by this nickname for a long time and, to be honest, it took me quite a while to realize the significance. He loves the sounds of language and chose the name for the rhythm and not for the meaning. But it is true that I am a mommy and I do, in fact, repeat...and repeat. I tried to tell my son that I would rather be called Mommy Says-Things-Only-One-Time, but have had no luck yet selling him on this new name. Mommy Repeat seems to have stuck.
Very cool. Love this idea. Cute boy and awesome flags!
ReplyDeleteThanks! It was lots of fun!
